WATER MEDIA PAINTING STUDIO: Weekend

This studio class is designed for people who are looking for a space to use for painting a few hours each week. There will be an instructor available if you have any questions, want to discuss the application of new techniques or just need advice on fixing problem areas. This studio class is a great supplement to any other painting classes you may be already taking. Come join us on Saturday mornings for a cup of coffee and spend a few hours painting.

Discover the techniques of realistic oil painting in the tradition of the Old Masters, but with a contemporary palette. Painters of all levels welcomed. The instructor will assist you with your choice of subject matter; please bring your own study or photo reference. A supply list will be given at registration.

Gonzalez has been painting professionally since 1993, and has been teaching privately since 1996. Various galleries throughout the U.S. and Europe represent his work. He has won numerous awards, and his artwork has been published in several national magazines including Southwest Art Magazine and American Art Collector. INTRODUCTION TO WATERCOLOR

In this six week class, we will cover all the watercolor basics - simple techniques such as washes, wet-into-wet, dry-brush, detail work. We will learn about values, textures, color theory and watercolor products you can use to make painting easier. This is a great course for a true beginner, or someone who has painted in the past, but needs to refresh their skills. We will do lots of small studies, and work up to finished paintings. Lots of fun, lots to learn!

Students will learn specific skills that will help them create more sophisticated paintings, and work towards their own painting style. While working on your own subject matter, we will cover topics such as loosening up, integrating subject/foreground with background, and using emotional color through demonstrations. ACTING LESSONS Instructor: Dr. Vince Privitera
Mr. Privitera has studied acting and directing at the Dramatic Workshop in New York City, he has written and directed several plays and movies, and he holds a Masters Degree in film studies from the University of Houston. He is presently in pre-production of his new film, "The Disappointed Sniper."

Mondays 6:30 - 9:30 p.m. (beginning on Jan 10)
Single class sessions; Class size limited Students must schedule lesson, register and pay at least one week in advance. Please schedule early as dates may fill up quickly.

Lessons are focused on individual needs and as always, "how not to get caught acting" or realism in acting. Students may take more than once.

GUITAR LESSONS (5 Sessions) Instructor: Dmitri Tchoulanov
Mr. Tchoulanov has studied music at the Odessa School of Music in the Ukraine, Moscow School of Music in Russia and Ecole de Musique in France.

*Become a member and save $15 on your first session of guitar lessons and $60 on every other session during your year of membership. (Annual Individual membership level $45Private and Group lessons are available. Dates and times are flexible.
Group lessons are offered when there are 2-6 students working at the same level, who can meet at the same time.

Beginning Guitar
(Acoustic or Electric) Beginning Acoustic - students will learn the proper sitting and holding positions, focus on finger placement and posture, and learn basic chords and plucking techniques. This course is for complete beginners or those wanting a fresh start with a more structured approach. Bring your own instrument. Beginning Electric - students will learn about the fundamentals of playing electric guitar, fingering, and sound producing techniques. Equipment use and preferences will be discussed. A few basic chord progressions and melodies will be learned, to be developed in the Intermediate Guitar (Electric) course. This course is ideal for absolute beginners. Bring your own instrument.

Intermediate Guitar
(Acoustic or Electric) Intermediate Acoustic - students will continue building on techniques that they know, developing more complex fingering and plucking techniques and working on music reading and rhythm exercises. This course integrates some basic music theory with guitar instruction. Great for those who know the basics and want to delve deeper into the world of classical guitar. Bring your own instrument. Intermediate Electric - students will continue working on their electric guitar technique; both left and right arm exercises will be done. Emphasis will be placed on chord progression and improvisation, while some basic music theory will also be integrated. Wet into Wet

Controlling the amount of water on your brush and on your paper is the key to this method. This method is also the one that makes people fall in love with watercolor. Leart to create diffused effects, washes and how to create high contrast areas in your focal point.

New! Critiquing Your Work

Most painters get to the point that a painting is almost finished....but it needs something.... In this class we will learn skills to critique work section by section, using a tried and true checklist. Then we learn how to make the changes necessary to push your work to a new level. This class will be some painting, some note taking, even some tips for ensuring your next painting gets off to a great start. Suitable for all water media.

Portraits

Learn to use full range of colors to create lively, energetic portraits. We will focus on mixing various skin tones, creating the form of the face with shadows and highlights, then features that sparkle and hair that looks natural to finish off.

NEW! Painting on Aquaboard

This product acts like paper but is framed like an oil painting - no glass or glare! It is a clay product layered onto masonite board, and with a few tips and tricks you can learn to paint washes and details like you would on watercolor paper, and learn to lift paint to make changes. What more could you ask for? Simple varnishing keeps your painting bright like wet paint, so the finished product is beautiful.

Beginner's Watercolor

Learn the Basics of this fun, challenging media. We will work on washes, painting wet and dry, details, color, value, texture and do a small painting to end the day. Basic supplies are needed - paper, a few brushes, and a few tubes of paint should be enough to get you off to a good start.

NEW! Pouring Workshop

Learn to pour paint onto wet paper to create luminous values in a rainbow of colors. Using masking fluid and wet paint, you will learn steps to do 90% of a watercolor painting without ever putting a brush to paper. Results are breathtaking, but the process is messy. Join in the fun for the month of June.

Everyday items that you have collected and or find interesting will be incorporated into your projects. Collage and assemblage techniques will be discovered and discussed. The project themes vary from Seascapes, Landscapes, and Phantasy Scapes so keep that in mind as you look for objects to use, but don't limit yourself. From styrofoam to beans, shells to bottle caps, anything that inspires you can be used to create texture and interest. Sabine will be here to help guide you and help you solve any problems that might arise.

The acrylic color workshop gives practical technical information on paint: pigments, mediums, techniques, and color mixing. The purpose is to educate and inspire artists. The workshop offers free Liquitex acrylic paints, books, and color charts to all attendees. It lasts about ninety minutes.

STROKES OF GENIUS: A Whole-Brained Art Experience (12 to Adult)

This six week session will involve learning about individual artists, their histories, influences, and styles. Students will use the information and discussions as creative stimuli to create a personal response through their art work. This is an integrated approach to learning where students use left-brain learning and communication, to inspire right-brained creativity and works of art. This class is a good supplement for home school art programs.

COLOR CRASH COURSE

Learn the basics of color theory, relationships, and ways to choose colors to give your work unity. Each week we will concentrate on different color combinations so that you can make educated color decisions when working at home.

DRAWING MATTERS 2

Drawing is a skill that can be learned. This course is designed to help you improve your ability to draw by guiding you through various sight / skill building exercises. Each week, this course will give you tools to be confident and independent in handling drawing, composition, and shading using a variety of media. This course is designed to encourage, explore and develop the creative side of being.

PAINTING ON GESSOED PAPER

Learn to paint over textured paper. An advantage to this technique is the ease of making changes to your work. Bring a sack lunch.

PROTRAIT IN OIL

During this workshop, students will learn about facial proportions, how to mix flesh tones highlights and shadows, how to apply them to the canvas without drawing the face and how to integrate a portrait in to a contrasting background.

POETRY DISCOVERY (12 to Adult)

This class is designed to introduce you to a wide variety of poets and poetry styles. There will be reading and responding to poetry in a variety of ways, including visual, verbal, and written. Shared techniques will help those who wish to write their own poems, using writing from prompts and exercises to respond to poetry, and make the most of your ideas. This workshop will have something for all people interested in poetry, from the novice to those more familiar with poetry, from someone who just wants to know more about poetry to those who wish to go deeper into writing their own poems.

SOFT PASTEL PAINTING

Students will experiment with soft pastel on various surfaces, learn ways to underpaint and mix color and leave with a better understanding of this luminous and often under appreciated medium.

PAINTING ON YUPO PAPER

Be bold and paint loosely on this synthetic surface which allows for fun effects, experimentation and easy changes. ( $5 Materials fee included in Tuition)

FREE FORM WIRE PENDANT: Basic Wire Wrapping (14 to Adult)

This is a good beginner’s class. You will never look at objects the same way again.
In this class the student will learn the basics of Wire Wrapping: how to make loops, spirals and how to properly wrap wire around wire. This is a great technique for wrapping found objects.
The student will leave with a finished pendant. All supplies are included in tuition.

TEXTURES IN WATERCOLOR

Learn many Different techniques to create texture in watercolor to heighten the realism of your paintings or to strengthen your non-objective works.

NON-TRADITIONAL ART: The Magic of Texture

Beginning and experienced students alike will discover how common materials can be transformed into contemporary artistic expressions using design and texture.
Bring everyday items that you have collected and or find interesting so they can be incorporated into your projects. The project theme will be "Under Water World" so keep that in mind as you look for objects to use, but don't limit yourself. Obvious items include shells, rocks, coral, etc… but try to think out of the box… rusty tuna cans & boat parts can be interesting too.
If you find it interesting bring it! As a finale to the workshop, all student works will be used to create a single large collaborative work of art, to be displayed in the gallery from June 3 - July 1, 2010.
